Tai Sawan is a group from Southern Thailand. (Tai translates as ‘under’ and Sawan as ’Paradise’). We represent the local flavour of Southern Thailand sea gypsy style Music as well as the Art and Culture of this region. The music of this group varies but is generally classified as indigenous folk music, similar to the (ronggeng) style music of Malaysia. The background stems from the Portuguese merchants (over 500 years ago) traveling throughout Europe and Southeast Asia. Initially the instruments used were from 3 cultures, European bringing mandolin, violin and accordion, Chinese bringing in the kong and Southern Thailand bringing in the drums.
Presently, Tai Sawan incorporates influences from multiple musical genres and nations such as Indonesia, Spain and Portugal, India, Nepal and Tibet, Europe, China, Malay and present (Bangkok) Thailand. Although their passion is the history and culture of the music of their nation, they embrace with great respect, the prowess of professional musicians and their expertise from around the world. From this perspective, Tai Sawan is moving to create modernized Thai style ‘world music’. Their presentation includes traditional classic Thai dancers performing to new compositions written to incorporate traditional folk style brought into the present. The dancers do the same. As a finale, the band members include a master shadow puppeteer who leaves his multiple instruments for a presentation with customary Nung Taloon (traditional Thai shadow puppetry) characters accompanied again by traditional, folk and new, eclectic music of the group.
